Transport Department |
| Alf Hayward - On Volunteer Driving Volunteers week has come and gone again, I can't believe that I have been associated with the C.C.F.V. for six years, the time has passed so quickly. I can still remember my very first job in 1998 when I was asked to collect a very sweet old lady and take her to a day centre, sadly this lady has since passed away. If you enjoy driving a car you will certainly enjoy being a volunteer driver. The work is very diverse and interesting, I have met many people both young and old over the years and made some good friends, especially the clients who need our services on a regular basis. The type of jobs I do fall into various categories, there are he regular school runs for which I have to get up early and there are journeys for hospital patients, journeys for other organisations such as the Blind Association and other disabled groups. The majority of my work is carried out on behalf of Social Services which involves transporting children in the care of local authorities and people who cannot afford, or do not have access to public transport; also our drivers are used by the Probation Services. About 3 years ago I started taking a client to a Macmillan day centre on one day a week, slowly, over a period of time I got to know most of the patients and staff so now when I deliver my client, I stay for the morning and help out by serving tea and have a good chat to them. It makes for a very enjoyable few hours. One of the great things about being a volunteer driver is that you can do as much or as little as you wish, so if you feel that you would like to spend some of your free time helping the good folk of Cornwall and enjoy yourself at the same time, then get in touch with the transport department at the C.C.F.V. on 01872 265300 to find out more.
